Third party insurance is compulsory for a motor vehicle and covers your liability to others. It does not pay for damage to your own vehicle at all. If your EV burns and you hold only a third party policy, there is no claim for the vehicle — a point many owners discover at the worst moment.
Damage to your own vehicle is covered by an own-damage component, either as part of a comprehensive policy or as a standalone own-damage policy. Fire is ordinarily an insured peril within that cover, and this is the section that matters when a battery goes up.
For an EV, look specifically at how the battery is treated. It is the most valuable part, and standard depreciation rules can reduce the payable amount significantly on a component that in practice fails as a unit. Insurers offer add-ons — zero depreciation, return to invoice, and in some products specific battery protection — and for an EV these change the economics of a total loss far more than they do for a petrol car.
