GRIHA — Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment — is the national rating system developed in India and endorsed for use on government and public projects. IGBC, the Indian Green Building Council, operates its own family of rating systems under the Confederation of Indian Industry, covering homes, residential societies, factories and more.
Both work on the same principle. A project earns points across categories: site planning, energy efficiency, water use and reuse, materials and their embodied impact, waste handling, indoor environmental quality and occupant comfort. The points determine the certification level awarded, from a base certification up to the highest tier.
Neither is a building approval and neither replaces one. They sit alongside the statutory permissions, and in some jurisdictions the statutory framework itself has begun to incorporate energy and water requirements independently of any voluntary rating.
