Credit bureaus in India are required to provide individuals access to their own credit report, and you should obtain and read yours before applying rather than after being rejected. The report lists every credit facility recorded in your name — loans, cards, overdrafts — with the sanctioned amount, current balance, and a month-by-month payment history.
That payment history is where a lender's attention goes. A single late payment years ago carries far less weight than a recent pattern of delays, and a written-off or settled account carries considerably more weight than either. The score compresses all of this into one figure; the report tells you which entry is doing the damage.
Check the identifying details too. Reports occasionally merge records belonging to different people with similar names or a shared address, and an account you have never held can sit in your file depressing the score. That is a correctable error, not a fact about your creditworthiness.
